external hard drive recommendations

Postby Hepcat Daddy-O » Tue Apr 22, 2008 12:33 am

I have been looking at possibly getting a new external hard drive and from reading all the reviews on Amazon, it appears that nobody is really happy with any of the drives - western digital, seagate, maxtor, iomega, lacie. So I am wondering what experiences (good or bad) you good people here at anyswing have had with any such products (I am sure many of you must have terabytes of data by now). Please be specific on the brand, model and capacity of the drive, type of connection you use (usb, firewire), and whether you are on a mac or pc. (I am on a PC and will be using a USB connection)

Thanks!

=D Hi Hep, I have 3 Western Digital, passaport type, that I have been using for more than a year, almost two. I find it very convenient as they are small and light. I can carry it in my bag from home to my office. I'm very happy with it. Recently bought a new one, also WD, the book type that stays home. This one has more capacity but is heavy, not portabel at all.

I also on a pc using usb connection.

I would recomend you as I never had any problems.

My friend Hep. This is like averything. If You have an EPSON, someone can tell U that HP is better.

In my PC, I have this Western Digital and this Seagate and I NEVER had problems.

Marilena has a very good trick: a big HHDD in home to download all work and backup everything. But if You want leave HD in your home PC, I recommend a internal USB/Firewire HD connection.

Remember this: today, in technologies EVERYTHING IS GOOD!!

I hope this help You.

Hugs, my friend.

I recently installed a new Kaser Storage Vault, 250 GB and a USB2/Firewire PCI card to connect it to. I'm on a (very old) PC.

I had a little trouble with it at first but after plugging the USB2 card into a different slot it has worked perfectly. So it was a motherboard/PCI card problem, not the new hard drive. I only turn it on when I need it (no need to have it on when booting), and it was relatively cheap. 70 something dollars (not including the PCI card and delivery).

I got it here:

I like these guys a lot.

hi hep. i like the others have wd and seagate. i bought a wd 640 gb about three months ago and i'm rmaing for the 4 time. so now its a 750 seagate the ns series. i have a couple of seagate 320 and a wd 80 gb that have been up for a year now. i think hdd are a crap shoot these days. if you get lucky one works for awhile. i read the readers comments on newegg.com and most hdd fail regularily and alot in the 20 to 25 percent range.. if i was looking for external storage i would buy a case and install the hdd of my choice. good luck t
i have wd and 2 seagates to rma. sata and pata

T99,

Thanks for your response. Actually this is kind of an old thread. The number of RMA's you have had doesn't make me feel too secure about what is available in the market. I decided that the number of GB per $$ didn't mean anything if I was going to get something that is prone to lose my data. I ended up getting a 320gb WD Passport, as recommended by Oh Marie. Research I did seemed to indicate that most people were happy with it and nobody complained about any crashes or faults with the drive. It works perfectly for me since I have a laptop. So far, I've had no problems with it - "knock on wood."
