How to keep the forum clean from spam

I understand Don is mad about the fact the last couple of weeks a lot of spammers are intruding our forum. Especially the ones with hardcore porn pics in them. He wrote at the chatbox he left the forum. He is right it's disturbing and sick that people are taking the risk to put up X-rated pictures at a forum where children are allowed too...just to make some money with there spam...

But how to avoid that? maybe the solution is not to have new members without sending them a password to their email adress. A lot of forums are doing this. It seems to work because the spammers don't use existing emailadresses (I understand after they send the spam they delete the traces) and therefore will not be able to log in. So you are not be able to be a new member as easy at this moment...

I'm not a computerwizzard...so....anybody knows if this could work?

It has to be sent a long time after, as there are sites that give you a valid e-mail that will last a short time and then it destroys itself automatically.

It is really annoying to face pornography and all this drugs adds

If I didn't love this place and my friends so much, I also would consider leaving.

all the spam i've seen here was in the public section. if it's so turning all forums to visible for logged users only will be part of the salvation?

We have crossed the boundary in terms of member numbers where we are irresistible to spammers.

We have added admins to help stem the tide, but that will only take us so far.

I have an idea, a crazy one (well, it IS me after all,) I think we should add a spam topic. Make a separate forum topic just for spammers. Call it "Porn Viagra Spam." Add a sticky at the top saying that all spam is welcome, and will be left alone as long as they don't post it in our music topics.

Will it work? No, probably not, but I just love a crazy idea.

These most likely are computer programs searching for some key words (e.g. 'girls') and forum keywords (e.g. phpBB2) and then will automatically try to sign up and post.
These aren't humans posting manually, or their posts would be a lot cleverer I guess.
