Jump Blues recommendations anyone?

Postby gabz » Tue Dec 29, 2009 11:21 pm

I am new to jump blues, just bump into mighty blue kings first 3 albums, his latest alive in the city is not my type though, in that album they sounded like huey lewis and the news for chrissakes. but meet me uptown, come on come all and live in chicago is a gasser! i was wondering if any of you can recommend me bands like them, that 40s 5os feeling.

If I found a new artist or genre I like, I usually use some recommendation systems to listen to more or less similar music. I would give last.fm a shot. For instance, MBK would give this result or this is from Amazon (look at "customers also bought" and especially the Listmania part at the bottom of the page). Another nice tool is Gnoosic or Music-Map, here the example for Brian Setzer. And just look around in our Neo Swing section, there you will find a lot of nice stuff.

Quite honestly I wouldn't have recommended anything else than Last.fm. All these bands are normally called Neo Swing, but they really fit if you like MBK, tagging them as Jump Blues may be misleading. From the first page I would skip Bill Elliott, being a more classic swing big band and Blue Plate Special, nice band, but not enough energy. Good thing about Last.fm is the ability to listen to some tracks, for me this is just better than words ever can be. And if you want me to choose one first, then I would take Atomic Fireballs. You may want to listen to Roomful of Blues or Lee Press-On, too.
