Everytime I hear albums I consider elegant Jazz I think how short changed music fans are by not being exposed to the real stuff. Smooth Jazz is to real Jazz what disco is to rock. In other words:crap. I know I've mentioned this kind of thing before but what brought it to mind this time was an album I listened to earlier today. It had been a while so I decided to get out my copy of Mark Murphy's "Once To Every Heart" It is beyond disgraceful that this isn't being played on so-called smooth jazz stations. The list of "should be played" is a long one and unfortunetly an ignored one. Will one of the major radio corporations try to revive some of their failing stations by putting on a Real Jazz format? Sure they will. Back to my collection.
Anyone else have favorite albums that should be aired?

smooth jazz stations are often in fact elevatormusic stations. Terrible. It's the difference between a cool Miles Davis and Kenny 'elevator' G for example but the majority isn't interesting in the good stuff. They are enjoying Kenny while vacuumcleaning, doing the dishes or making a phonecall while saying...gee..I love this radiostation...great music!

The trouble is (I worked for a radiostation as well) you need the majority otherwise the sponsors will run away and you'll have no station at all I'm afraid...Sad but true... The solution is internetradio nowadays. It's cheap to make and you don't need that many sponsors. If you can make a living out of it? I don't think so...

Back in the day I worked at a major Jazz station. When it was decided there was more money in something else it was goodbye Miles etc. When complaint calls came in we were told to ask three questions:
1.When was the last time you called the station?
2.What was the last album you bought?
3.What was the last Jazz concert you attended?
An inactive audience has to share some blame.
I have worked for other stations since with some Jazz programming but it was weekends only. Real Jazz continues to disappear except for bloggers, internet radio and some college stations.
You're right about making money out of it. Not any more.
It's just too bad that so many people are being forcefed such crap and don't have a clue about the real thing. Why listent to Miles & Trane when you have John Tesh, Yanni and Kenny G.

INternet radio stream is dying, guys. What now?

Not just internet radio but terrestrial radio in general is dying..and it should. The industry is grossily mismanaged by non broadcasters who don't have a creative bone in or near their bodies. Best thing to do? What we used to call MOR...My Own Records. The only thing radio is good for these days is a paperweight. Am I a bitter long term broadcaster that's seen my industry crumble..Damn right!
