I am not sure about what's the greatest album art, it depends on individuall taste, but it does not harm to share!

I love this one:

We brazilians have marvellous art work creations, it is hard to decided which, but I'm sure the best ones are among ours ! It is a great idea to create this section !

Wonderful choice. But I prefer the cartoons! aeae

I know there's LOTS OF better covers than Big Kahuna's, but this one really makes me SWING every time I see it.

This is not all that artistic, but after going back through all those retro websites I was in the mood for this:

When I think of retro album covers, I think of all the covers in the lounge/exotica genre (sometimes generalized as “easy listening”). I know that is a little different type of music than what we cover here in this forum, but there are exotica collectors out there that will collect the album only for its cover. I am not a great expert on exotica album covers. If I were I would post a good example for you to see.

The pinnacle of exotica albums was the period of about 1955 to 1963 with 1959 to 60 being the peak years. Most albums featured "exotic" themes...mostly women in exotic scenery, poses and costumes. The tiki cups you see in the Brian Setzer album and the Hawaiian theme in Big Kahuna album are taken from the Lounge/exotica genre. Exotica is obsessed with all things Tiki and a lot of music has a Polynesian theme, because anything Polynesian was considered exotic. I think also around this time, the musical and movie South Pacific came out to further push the Polynesian theme with the public. If you are interested in this style of music, I would suggest you check out an Arthur Lyman album…I always thought he was the best of the exotica artists.

The Frank Sinatra album looks to me like it was influenced by the Crime Jazz genre of music. This is an offshoot of Lounge that focused on very dramatic jazzy music that was popular with detective and crime fighting TV shows of the era of around the same time 1955 - 1963. Emphasis was on “cool” the “suit” and the “cigarette.” Just think of any old black and white detective show.

Actually, anyone interested in lounge music and style should check out the entire Ultra Lounge compilation series. Check out their web site to see the type of retro visuals styles of this genre.

From the mid '50s. Don't know what it is about this one that makes it both fascinating & vaguely unsettling to me. It's not a bad album, but has a hefty string section that prevents Al Cohn & Joe Newman from swinging in the way nature intended.

uhwelluh,

I think the caption for that picture is something like:

"And this is your third eye. Now take a D E E P breath ... and buy me a diamond."

Ha! Steve--if that's what's going on it's no wonder I'm traumatized.

Not very retro--but according to my parents I found this album cover endlessly fascinating when I was toddler.

wow! it's a great topic! thank you, Luiz!
three of my favorite (of different music styles)

NEST -Woodsmoke- (ambient) it'so simple... and it's a real woodsmoke, isn't it?
Image

SARAKINA -Sarakina- (folk, jazz) who wouldn't like to play on these strings?
Image

The Atomic Fireballs -Torch This Place- (neo swing) so much drive, energy, SWING in the pose of the singer!

Being an amateur photographer myself, I always liked a good shot. Here are two of my favorites:

Image
Marie Boine - Gula Gula
Image
Jerry Harrison Casual Gods

Both I bought as vinyls and to give you an impression of their larger format, I decided not to cut them down and post only the thumbnails. Ypu can open the full size by clicking the picture. The eye is from a snow owl, I don't know the photographer who shot this. The cover of Casual Gods is by Sebastião Salgado and shows the gold mine "Serra Pelada" in brasil.

And if you like a good laugh, have a look at some really bad cover art, too. And there is a, hmm, cover version of the Herb Alpert "Whipped Cream" cover as well. Don't follow this link without a brave heart.
