rar and zip file naming request

Postby Steve » Thu Jun 07, 2007 9:38 pm

Hey Guys and Gals,

I wonder if it would be too much trouble to name your compressed files the same as the album?

When you've download a hundredfortyleven new albums and are trying to figure out which you've already downloaded and which you've already decompressed, it can get really confusing when the album is called "All The Best Tunes" and the rar file is called HJUWYTNG57663.rar and theres a subfolder called "all the" and a sub-sub folder called "best tunes."

We all have relatively recent computers that can handle long file names, all of the file sharing sites can handle long file names, and I can't tell what the hell is going on anymore.

Whaddaya say?

Does this sound like a reasonable idea?

It would certainly make my life a little easier.

Thanks

I haven't been as obscure as the cases you have mentioned, but I am fearful of file hosting services running some sort of text string search and deleting file names that might be ordered to delete by the RIAA or someone else. The last thing I want to do is re-upload everything I have already uploaded. It's such a time consuming process to post. Generally, I try to make the file name something that anyone can decipher, but it may not be the full name of the artist and the album. I think using just the album name (or pat of the name) without the artist name is generally a good way to go, if the album name is not too unique. I don't know...maybe I am just paranoid and my concerns are unfounded. I just do want to have to do it all over again.

While I agree that that is possible, have you noticed how the file deletions go in cycles? Like someone every so often goes on a rampage of reporting any and everything?

I totally understand your concerns, but I can only hope you'll have a tiny bit of compassion for the situation I'm describing and at least label things in some sort of understandable fashion.

Thanks again.

What I do is name the file by the initials of the artist and album ... ie: Screamin' Jay Hawkins - At Last I put as sjh_al.rar that way it is somewhat hidden but understandable as to what you've downloaded.

maybe that should be the naming convention we should use on this board? (Hide in plain sight)...kinda the best of both worlds ;)

That makes perfect sense, but I reserve the right to say "I told you so" when the disguised names disappear from the file sharing sites at the same time as my actual file names.
