Geve me a kiss:

He’s been described as “The Blues discovery of the ’90s”, which is a pretty heavy label to live up to, but there’s no doubting Robert Lucas’ total commitment to his music, his assertive, passionate singing, and his all-round ability on both guitar and harmonica. Lucas’ fourth album for Audioquest Music finds the blues boy laying back from the white hot searing approach employed on his previous Built For Comfort. Robert’s vocals have eased up a little, the slide guitar is less frenetic, while his harmonica playing is well to the fore in both acoustic and amplified modes.
Layaway features a mixture of originals and covers, and solo, duo and band tracks. The assembled musicians all make fine contributions without overplaying their individual parts. Drummer Lee Campbell lays down some excellent patterns, the three guitarists (Dave Melton, Robert Laiberman and Paul ‘Pops’ Bryant) contribute some individual soloing. Pianist Steve F’dor adds immeasurably to the band sound and gets to step out into the limelight on a duet with Lucas on Chiropractor Blues. There is also a hard working two-man horn section who drive along real nice whenever they make an appearance. Lucas gives his fellow musicians plenty of space and he’s obviously enjoying their company.

This album amply demonstrates Lucas’ ability to write original material to cover a spectrum of blues from acoustic country all the way to the rocking electric end of things. Having produced four strong albums in four short years Robert Lucas is certainly proving a prolific and prodigious talent. Dave Peabody

Another kiss, darling...

Crying out the pains and joys of the blues is not just an act for this band -- it genuinely bleeds through. Don't believe it? Look at the back liner note endorsements by Willie Dixon and Robert Jr. Lockwood. Even more brilliant is Lucas' songwriting, poking fun at himself in "Big Man's Mambo," and offering the advantages of having a large frame to the ladies. His moaning harmonica effectively plays into the subject of growing old with its aches and pains in "Shed a Tear," and is equally as effective in "I'm So Tired." ~ Char Ham
