I'm gonna give it a try with this topic...because it's a forum and we've got a lot of members but so few people who actually share their thoughts ohyeah!

Back in the 80ties I was at a concert in Amsterdam of Sinatra, Davis jr and Liza Minelli. Yes, liza because the other ratpacker (Dean Martin) was ill...too bad but it was still a great concert.

By the way: Liza was impressive too! aeae

Brain Setzer Orchestra at the Santa Barbara County Bowl (a lovely amphitheatre) back in 1999. DAMN what a horn section.

These pics aren't from that concert, I just wanted you to see the place.

Every Maynard Ferguson concert is tied for first and there were a lot of them
Two memorable incidents:
1971-Brandi's Wharf, Phila.. Buddy Rich. In the middle of a number in walks Bette Davis and Robert Wagner. Buddy and the band went for the stratosphere.
1973-place will remain anonymous, Stan Kenton. He was so annoyed at the sound he stopped the band in the middle of the first number and said, "Where did you get this sound system, Sears?"

I was about 10 when my dad took me to see the Count Basie orchestra (in Ohio, I think). Basie was too sick to tour at that point, but Cab Calloway filled in as conductor. The band was on a rotating stage & we had great seats because the auditorium was nowhere near full. I can still picture Freddie Greene perched on a stool, strumming his guitar. Calloway fit plenty of "hi de hoing" into the concert--maybe too much so for some lady sitting behind us who kept muttering "let it lay Cab, let it lay" as he got into his act.

Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, Los Angeles, around 1978 or 9. Awesome.

At first I thought I would have a problem with this, but then it became obvious. I saw the Temps & Tops Show (4 Tops & the Temptations) three times. It was worth the price of admission just to hear Levi Stubbs hit all the notes on "I Believe In You And Me" and the Temps do "Lady Soul". I still have the programs and ticket stubs around here somewhere. Thanks all for bringing back some happy times.

PS _ I'm going to get some flack for this, but the runner-up would be Barry Manilow in 1977. Say what you want about Barry (and I have) the man is a showman.

Hmmm, there's been a few that really stand out over the years.
Hawkwind Space Ritual Tour 1973 -Psychedelic bass driven space rock at it's finest. Lemmy of Motorhead was in the band.

Pink Floyd - Anaheim Stadium Animals Tour 1977

Golden Earring 1983? These guys are some of the finest rock musicians I've seen.

Sam Butera (3 times) Louis Prima Tribute Tour

These were all great but hands down, no doubt about it, the best show I've been to was a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame COncert Tribute to Louis Jordan.
Check out this lineup. I had front row center seats.
Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band
Duke Robillard
Robert Lockwood Jr.
Bo Diddly
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
B.B. King
Ruth Brown

They all performed Louis Jordan tunes, except for Bo Diddly. He said he respected Louis Jordan but his name is Bo and he only does Bo Diddly songs. It seemed a bit pompous if you ask me.
Ruth Brown was amazing. We lost a true musical genius when she passed. I'm so glad I had the chance to see her. Her and B.B did some nice duets too.

You've seen some great performers! But I smiled when you mentioned the Golden earring...there are from my own country and therefore I can't imagine someone outside Holland is a fan...why? I'm glad you asked =D

There was once a documentary about these guys and they talked about the Radar Love years. It was a hit even in the US of A and they toured overthere but not for long...after a couple of gigs they were getting homesick! And went back home...so much for being rockstars aeae

Nowadays they are still touring. Safely in their own country...close to home...it's sad they could have been a great band all over the world...although in my humble opinion they made many many records but only one Radar Love...if you know what I mean...

Why am I a fan you ask?
Because they were one of the best bands in that era. The songwriting was solid with great lyrics. Radar Love was a hit that got my attention but it was listening to the other stuff they did that made me a real fan.
Radar Love isn't even the best song on that album.

In my opinion, Fighting Windmills is the best song they wrote, Mad Love's Coming is a great one too. Gosh, so is Candy's Gone Bad, Vanilla Queen, She Flys On Strange Wings, C'est Soir, the list goes on and on.
I know they are still kickin' it in Holland? I think? I haven't heard much stuff recently from them, besides a cd of a live show.
I do remember leaving the concert thinking what a great band, and a great show I just saw. They were top shelf musicians and they were very well rehearsed. They were, at that time, promoting the release of their US hit Twilight Zone.

The Golden Earring have made three unplugged albums with all their hits in Holland. These cd's (called naked truth) were rather popular (that will explain the three in a row I guess =D ) in the Netherlands in the 90ties. The boys (read: the old dudes) toured unplugged in theatres where people were supposed to sit in comfortable chairs...but still sold out everywhere so in a way...yes they are still kickin it! But I'm not a big fan...sorry :D
